Come and See
In our Gospel reading today Nathanael asks: “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” I imagine him asking this kind of flippantly. He already believes that nothing good can come from such a place. I, for one, know exactly how it feels to have already made my mind up. Like Nathanael I have at certain times, probably more often than I would like to admit, have asked “Can anything good come out of this?”
Can anything good come out of this grief? This loss? This hate? This destruction? Can anything good come out of this failure? This shortcoming? This slip up? This mistake?
Philip answers Nathanael: “Come and see.”
This is all that we can do. Open ourselves up to the possibility. Have hope. Live in faith. Abide in God’s love. Come and see what good can come out of this.
