We All Have Gifts

The reading in Genesis today is about the deception planned by Jacob and Rebekah to steal Esau’s birthright. It is one of those Old Testament stories that makes one uncomfortable and brings up our own family battles and problems. The reading in Romans talks about how we should “discern what is the will of God-what is good and acceptable and perfect.” We are all given gifts; we will all flourish in the eyes and love of God.

That is difficult to remember and practice. We want to prove we are right or worthy; sometimes we are jealous of what others have received. But it isn’t our place to judge, it isn’t our place to envy or covet; it isn’t our place to battle for more. “We have many members, and not all members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another…We have gifts that differ according to the grace given us.”
