What, Me Worry?

AM Psalm [70], 71 • PM Psalm 74
Lev. 19:26-37 • 2 Thess. 1:1-12 • Matt. 6:25-34

In today’s gospel reading Jesus mentions the word “worry” five times, giving us specific examples of the worries of life we should trust God to provide if only we align our lives to strive first for the Kingdom of God and God’s righteousness.

This is a perfect time of year for this reading – the flowers and flowering trees of Spring are blooming; the browns and bareness of winter has turned to green seemingly overnight; and the birds are back to bring us pleasure in their singing and sightings.

I was particularly drawn to the question Jesus asks his followers: “And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life?” Jesus knew then what modern medicine and scientific research has taught us – that worrying can reduce life expectancy.

Rev. Tim Chesterton reminds us that Jesus offers us three attitudes to lean into and improve our lives and our relationship with God and the world: Joy in God and all good things that God has made; trust in God’s goodness and daily provision for our needs; and focus on doing God’s will in the work of healing the world.

One day at a time.
