What Do I Think?

Lev. 26:27-42 • Eph. 1:1-10 • Matt. 22:41-46

Matthew 22:41-46 begins like this:

Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them this question: ‘What do you think of the Messiah?’

I look at this passage and think:

This is a trick question. Jesus IS the Messiah and the Pharisees don’t accept that reality. The One they are waiting for is sitting right there with them. The Messiah is calling to the Pharisees to let down their defenses; let go their preconceived ideas. The rabbi from Nazareth, who they call Jesus bar Joseph, the carpenter’s son, is in reality The Son of David and they should call him Lord.

Okay. I guess that's how I answer the question: “What do you think of the Messiah?”

And this where I stop and take a breath. I reflect on my small act of imagination and how it shapes my actions. I imagine the rabbi from Nazareth sitting down with me, looking up at me and asking me:

And what do think of The Lord? What do you mean when you call me ‘Lord?’
