Good News

AM Psalm 8, 148 • Job 38:1-7 • Hebrews 1:1-14
PM Psalm 34, 150 or 104 • Daniel 12:1-3 or 2 Kings 6:8-17 • Mark 13:21-27 or Revelation 5:1-14

If the Gospel is Good News, for whom is the destruction of the world a comfort? I read our lesson for today and think it sure sounds bleak. But there must be a person who thinks, “You know what would improve my lot? If the whole universe crumbled and God came to sweep me up.” I believe there are people who truly feel this way, sometimes justifiably so. The news of destruction of our world sounds good to the ears of someone who is living under oppressive rule. The rapture is relief for those imprisoned unjustly, tortured, trafficked, enslaved.

Sometimes when I read the Gospel it challenges me. I, like you, tend to get fixed in my own perspective. It’s simply the nature of humanity. But I do find it helpful to be invited to expand my frame of reference.

Even if the words of the Gospel do not exactly sound like Good News to me, I can be about the Good News they are for others. Jesus came to liberate all people. I want to be a part of that movement. Do I want the world to end right here right now? Not really. But when the Son of Man does come in all of his glory it will be a good thing. I will be ready because it will mean freedom for my siblings in Christ who need that news.
