Cups and Plates
FROM THE CURATE
One of the interesting things about being newly ordained is the sudden acquisition of communion sets. In the month since my ordination to the priesthood, I have received three communion sets. Three patens and three chalices. Three plates and three cups. Before long I may have a full set of dishes in my office! These three communion sets are sacred and incredibly special to me. They will always be the first communion sets I received as a priest, and they all have wonderful stories. On another level, they are simply plates and cups.
I wonder, how many plates and cups are in your home. How many opportunities for communion are in your home? Jesus reminds us to remember him whenever we eat bread and drink wine. Any time we enjoy a meal, we have a chance to remember Jesus.
Many of you have continued to worship from home for months now, and with the delta variant, many will return to worshipping at home. It can be hard to be away from our communal Eucharist. I know these are difficult choices and there may be moments when you feel the strain of distance.
While you may not have a communion set at home, you surely have plates and cups. They may be your fancy china or a plastic plate with a Disney character’s face printed on it. I hope that each plate and each cup, each piece of bread and each glass of your favorite beverage, may be a reminder of Christ. I pray that you will know the Body of Christ is never far from you. May you be reminded that the communion of God’s people happens everywhere, not just at the communion table in our Eucharist.
We have a God that showed up in human form and ate normal meals with his human friends. I am certain our God also shows up in the everyday moments around normal plates and normal cups. God is with you, my friends.
Peace,
Adelyn
