One of the treasures of Christian practice is the commendatory prayer offered at the time of death: “Depart, O Christian soul, out of this world...” Where does that prayer come from? And why is it addressed to the soul of the deceased and not to God? In this one-week class, we will examine the history and theology of that prayer.
