Woman, what concern is that to you and to me?
AM Psalm 41, 52 • PM Psalm 44
Deut. 8:11-20 • Heb. 2:11-18 • John 2:1-12
Jesus has been recognized and baptized by John. He has called Andrew, Peter, Philip, and Nathanael to be his disciples. With his mother they are at a big party – a wedding. Mary, his mother, says, “They have no wine.” And Jesus replies with, “Woman, what concern is that to you and me?” and follows it with “My time has not yet come.” Did Jesus just want to have fun, do his own thing? When would his time come? He’d been baptized, he had disciples. What was he waiting for?
Then in the next few sentences, Mary gives instructions to the servants to do what Jesus says. And Jesus says, “fill the water-jars” and there is wine. What happened? What changed? I believe it was more than just doing what his mama says!
What changes our hearts (minds)? How do we go from: It’s not my concern. It’s none of my business. It’s not my job. What moves us from: I can’t do that. I’m not ready. And then we do, we are, it is.
Sometimes it is as small a thing as picking up a bit of trash. Sometimes it is a huge thing like saying yes to a life-long commitment to another person. Sometimes it is taking part in a movement beyond my personal comfort zone. Sometimes it is saying “yes” to a position of leadership I don’t feel ready for. And the list goes on.
For me the change from “not my concern” to “yes” is often God’s nudge in the middle of my back. (Or God’s shove if I’m being stubborn.) There is a feeling of it being right and it probably won’t be easy, but just then “yes” is the only answer I will give.
