Be about love.

AM Psalm 105:1-22 • PM Psalm 105:23-45
Dan. 6:1-15 • 2 John 1-13 • Luke 5:12-26

The letter from John today is addressed to a woman and her children. Perhaps a household, a Christian family. This is striking, as so much of the biblical text is patriarchal in nature. A letter written not to the male leader of a Christian community but to a single household like yours or mine.

This makes me wonder, what words of encouragement in the faith does my household need today? What about yours? Perhaps, the words of John are just what you need to hear.

“And now, dear lady [read sir if so inclined], I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another.”

It can be so tempting to think we need to be doing more or working harder. Again and again, God calls us and Jesus, the disciples, and apostles remind us to take it back to the basics. There is only ever one simple command for you and your household: love.

In the words of our Presiding Bishop, Michael Curry: “If it’s not about love, it’s not about God.” This is the reminder my household needs today and every day. Be about love.
