You Put All Things Under His Feet

AM Psalm 8, 47 • PM Psalm 24, 96
Ezek. 1:1-14, 24-28b • Heb. 2:5-18 • Matt. 28:16-20

Today Psalm 8 has captured my attention. The psalmist asks,

What is man that you should be mindful of him? *
the son of man that you should seek him out?

You have made him but little lower than the angels; *
you adorn him with glory and honor;

You give him mastery over the works of your hands; *
you put all things under his feet...

As Paul pointed out in Hebrews, “man” and “son of man” referenced in these ancient hymns are not referencing only the messiah. We are created as the stewards of the Earth that God made. Every person is adorned with God’s glory and honor, but being a little lower than the angels means that we have charge of the Earth’s oxen, beasts, birds, and fish.

This psalmist treats this responsibility of humanity with awe, but do we? It isn’t sustainable to rule the Earth by developing the beasts’ habitat into suburbs or raising the acidity of the fishes’ sea. How do we accept that God has given us responsibilities as well as rights? Are we willing to be like Jesus and become like a servant to the creation that we are in charge of?
