Let Us Not Grow Weary

Psalm 69:1-23 (24-30) 31-38 • Psalm 73
Eccles. 11:9 -12:14 • Gal. 5:25-6:10 • Matt. 16:21-28

I cannot help but reflect upon the appointed readings from my “pandemic perspective” – even though I know that “this, too, shall pass.” I am aware that these scriptures have been read for millennia and under far more dire circumstances, but I am contemplating them from my reality, here and now.

In the letter to the Galatians we find those familiar words, “you reap whatever you sow.” (Gal. 5:7) This passage always brings to mind the spiritual principle found in Hinduism and Buddhism known as karma – with a little bit of The Golden Rule thrown in, for good measure.

Later in the reading from Galatians, we are reminded that we all make choices and that our choices have an impact on others (cue the current discourse re: mask wearing in public…) Paul continues with this message, “So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up. So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of faith.” (Gal. 6:9-10)

It has been a struggle for me to be physically separated from so many friends and family members, including my St. Paul’s community, but I understand that this has been for the good of all. I trust that the “harvest time” will come when we can reap being with our “family of faith” again, but in the meantime, a reminder to us all: don’t give up!
